What are The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards?

The Alliance for Young Artists & Writers, a national nonprofit organization, was established in 1994 to provide guidance and support for the next generation. The Alliance fosters the creative development of youth across the country through the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards program, involving over 90,000 students in grades 7 – 12 each year.

Young artists and writers submit more than 230,000 creative works to a network of Regional Affiliates that locally administer the awards. The most outstanding works from each of the regions are then sent to New York to be judged on a national level. For the past six years, students have submitted more than 1 million works and over $40 million has been made available in scholarships and awards to top winning participants.

SHAC is proud to partner with the Alliance to host the regional competition and exhibition for Maury County for both arts and writing.  Regional winners are eligible for scholarships and cash prizes, are part of a local exhibition, and have their work sent to New York City for national judging.


Who is Eligible?

Students in grades 7-12 may submit newly created works from January – December of each year.

Students should discuss their interest in the competition with their school art teacher. Students attending schools that are not participating may enter independently. Artwork should be pre-juried by the school art teacher.

Submission Deadlines

All students and teachers must be registered through the Online Registration System WITH uploaded artwork by Thursday, December 14, 2017.

Entry Fees

Entry Fees are determined by the National Alliance for Young Artist & Writers and are as follows:

  • $5.00 per individual entry
  • $20.00 per portfolio


Checks can be made payable to Spring Hill Arts Center or paid via PayPal

Fee waivers are available to students for whom fees are a barrier to participate. Teachers or administrators must attach the fee waiver form to their submission form.
